We are thrilled to announce the official launch of the National Network for Immigrants and Refugees-Canada (NNIR), a black refugee-led organization dedicated to supporting and empowering Black immigrants and refugees in Canada under the theme “Built for Us, By Us,”
The official launch event was a resounding success, and we were privileged to welcome the Speaker of the Canadian House of Commons, Hon.Greg Fergus, as our Guest of Honor. His attendance underscored the significance of NNIR’s mission and its pivotal role in shaping a brighter future for Black Immigrants and Refugees throughout the nation. In his motivating keynote speech during a Q&A session with our Founder and Executive Director Raymond Gukiina, Hon. Greg highlighted the importance of Refugee led organizations like NNIR that are founded in the experiences and leadership of the communities they serve.
“This network is a shining example of what can be achieved when communities come together to address their own needs,” according to him. “NNIR is more than just a service provider; it’s a lifeline for many people facing the settlement challenges in a new country.
On behalf of the NNIR team, Raymond presented Hon.Greg with a portrait of himself in his official attire as a symbol of appreciation for his time, dedication to public service, and acceptance of NNIR’s invitation to attend as Guest of Honour at our Launch.
NNIR was founded with the goal of creating a community where Black Immigrants and Refugees receive holistic support to their own specific needs. From advocacy and newcomer settlement programs to mental health assistance and economic empowerment initiatives.
We believe in the power of collective action and we are proud to be an organization founded by and for Black Immigrants and Refugees and we encourage you to join us on this journey to ensure that every Black Newcomer has the opportunity to thrive in Canada.
